Iran- 2003 earthquake

December 26, 2003. A 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck Bam, Iran. It was very destructive. It killed 26 271 and injured 30 000 people. The US offered assistance to Iran as they had promise to comply with an agreement. 44 countries sent in personnel to help in relief operation and 60 countries offered help. As many buildings in Bam are made of mud bricks, the amount of damage and the effects of the earthquake were exacerbated. Iranian President Mohammad Khatami urged all Iranians to help its victims. A large number of people were killed as the earthquake struck when most of the people were sleeping. The cost of the damages was between US $ 700 000 000 and US $ 1 000 000 000. It was caused by northward motion of the Arabian plate against the Eurasian plate, thus causing an earthquake. To prevent damage from such events, the construction workers should not cut cost as the buildings are not as strong as what they the buildings are. If they do not cut cost, the buildings would be still be standing when an earthquake strikes. Therefore, the amount of damage made is minimised.
